Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28)
We are ready for a shift. Can you sense it?
Many have hopes that the flipping of a calendar page will lighten their load and encourage their hearts. If only it was that simple for our circumstances to improve. Seeking a change of perspective is much more effective, especially if the perspective is a divine one.
Jesus invites us to instantly find rest as we join him - daily, weekly, seasonally. We simply turn our attention to him and immediately we become illuminated with his perspective. At St. John, we refer to this joining with Jesus as “abiding.” One of the best abiding times of the year is winter as the world goes dormant.
Today we begin a new year, yet there is nothing magical about it. Our true hope is found in our Creator who, out of his deep love for us, sent his Son, embodied in human form, to set us into right relationship. We do nothing except come to him. And we have a standing invitation to come and abide. Every. Single. Day.
No other relationship is so easy, so forgiving. We take his outstretched hand, receive his always compassionate gaze, and Jesus makes us whole. This is how to begin 2021.
During the month of January, we’ll be highlighting several retreat opportunities to help you intentionally draw near to Jesus. Below is a brief description of each. Set the time aside in your calendar. Register now so that your season of abiding brings you closer to Jesus and you find true rest.
The Footsteps of Jesus: January 15-1, scheduled hours based on time zone
If you are sick and tired of being cooped-up during this pandemic, come with us on a virtual pilgrimage, following the life of Jesus! In four sessions over three days we will explore the life of Jesus from birth to resurrection, reflecting on the meaning of his life for our lives. From the comfort of your own home you will get to walk in Jesus' footsteps from Bethlehem to Nazareth to Jerusalem as we draw on history, archaeology, and culture to bring Jesus and his extraordinary life into clearer focus, with thousands of photos, reconstruction drawings and maps. Our guide for the Weekend Experience is Bob Rognlien, pastor, teacher, and author who has been leading pilgrimages in the Footsteps of Jesus for nearly 30 years. This Weekend is based on his new book, Recovering the Way.

Kingdom on Earth: Saturday, January 30, 9-noon
Our annual Lay Pastor retreat will be now open for the benefit of everyone -- Retreat4All!
Last summer, St John Lay Pastors Mickey Kibler and Ann Eustis heeded the Lord's call to be a part of an international huddle on prophetic listening and responding. They are excited to have an opportunity to begin to share some of their learning in a humble confidence as the Holy Spirit leads them.
What would it look like to have the kingdom on earth – Matthew 6: 9-10? “This, then, is how you should pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”
What does it mean to act justly and to love mercy (Micah 6: 8)?
For answers to these questions and more, plan to attend. And don’t let the word “prophetic” intimidate you. As is the case with all St John discipleship, this content will be completely accessible regardless of your discipleship experience, and totally “not weird”! The retreat will include brief teaching sessions as well as time for group discussion and application. Free to all participants. Click here to Register and receive the Zoom link.
